“Tell me about yourself”

“Tell me about yourself”

If you’re applying for jobs, you know this is coming…

“Tell me about yourself.”

You know it’s coming, but are you properly ready for it? Or do you find yourself rambling, waffling, playing down your achievements and talking yourself out of the job?

The elevator pitch

Get it right, and it becomes a clear, confident introduction to who you are, what you bring, and why you’re the right fit. You give the interviewer a great first impression and set the tone for a positive interview. You stop sounding like you’re a living, breathing job description, and start sounding like the answer to their prayers.

That’s why we’ve spent the last two live coaching sessions inside Get Hired! focused on fixing this and building a pitch that works. Here’s the formula:

  • Start with where you are now (not at the beginning of your 20 year career).
  • Pull out the golden thread that connects your career: the problems you’ve solved, and how you consistently add value.
  • Share two highlights you’re proud of that demonstrate that golden thread.
  • Finish with what lights you up about the role in front of you and confirm what a great fit you are.

The real magic happens when you start speaking it out loud, and someone who knows what they’re talking about (because they’re a comms pro in the same boat), reflects it back to you with clarity and kindness.

That’s what we practised together inside the Get Hired! programme this month. This is what Naomi said about Get Hired!

“I wanted to say a huge thank you for your kindness, proactivity, and for being such a good mentor to us all – it can’t be easy with all our questions and points on the Whatsapp group in particular as that’s not restricted to the session times and you’re always responsive! You have been wonderfully fun and engaging and I’m very much looking forward to saying hi in person.”

Get Hired! guides you through the whole recruitment process – from working out what your next move is, to making it happen. Take the course at your own pace, and join weekly coaching calls for support, training and expert guest speakers.

It’s like an outplacement course, on steroids, and created specifically for you.

If you’re planning a job move in January, now’s the time to do this work. Not when you’re panic-applying and trying to stand out amongst the new year throng.

Join us now and start January ahead of the crowd. You can book a call with me here to discuss your suitability.
