Still job hunting after six months (or more)?
Still job hunting after six months (or more)?
What if you’re still job searching after six months, or a year?
You started with optimism. You updated your CV, turned on open to work, and started applying.
It feels like you’re doing all the right things. And yet, you haven’t landed a job.
You are not alone. The job market is a basket-case (in case you hadn’t noticed).
Automation and AI tools, like LinkedIn Recruiter and Workday are misfiring. Brilliant candidates aren’t being seen, and hiring managers aren’t getting the talent they need. Nobody wins.
A class action lawsuit in the US may shake things up and bring back some humanity, but that doesn’t help you today.
So what can you do?
This is where you need a plan. One that protects your mental health, your finances, and your self-worth.
It might mean shifting from Plan A to Plan A+.
Here’s how:
Reframe your strategy:
Stop relying solely on online applications. Add proactive outreach, strategic networking, and visibility to your mix. Your strategy needs to be a mix of hunting (for people to connect with and opportunities to apply for) and gathering (attracting people into your orbit).
Become unmissable:
LinkedIn’s algorithm favours consistent activity. Start showing up, consistently. Comment on posts. Share your story. Let people know you’re here, you’re skilled, and you’re ready.
Explore other income streams:
Freelance work. Copywriting. Or a side hustle you’ve parked for too long. When my chips were down in the past I dived into making money online through affiliate marketing. Be creative. Diversifying buys you breathing room.
Use your time wisely, not endlessly:
Set limits on job search hours. Spend just as much time recharging and reconnecting with what energises you. You can’t pour from an empty cup.
Ask for help (before you burn out):
Asking for help doesn’t make you weak. It makes you wise.
