The new rules of the job search

The rules of the job search have changed and no one has bothered to explain how to win.

It all used to be so straightforward. Now we’re dealing with AI gatekeepers, ghosting employers – even after multiple interviews – and companies asking for free work disguised as ‘assessments.’ Sound familiar?

Most people play the numbers game – spraying and praying their CVs everywhere like confetti. That’s exactly what NOT to do.

This is the smarter way to approach your job search:

Get crystal clear about YOU

Think of this as building your personal brand’s foundation. Before you start swinging at every job posting, ask yourself:

  • What unique combination of skills makes you, you?
  • What achievements make you proud?
  • Collect the evidence and take control of your stories.

Define your target

Quality beats quantity every time. It’s better to send five stellar, researched applications than fifty generic ones. Don’t lower your standards. Create your list of non-negotiables.

  • What kind of workplace culture makes you thrive?
  • What management style brings out your best?
  • What values do you want your employer to embody?

Furnish your professional shop window

Your CV and LinkedIn profile are your marketing campaign. Make them work harder.

  • Transform boring lists of responsibilities into mini case studies of achievements and outcomes.
  • Speak directly to your dream employer’s needs and address their problems.

Fish where the fish are!

While you’re scrolling through job boards, your dream company is probably asking their top performers, “Know anyone great who could do this job?”

And while you may not know anyone in those companies yet, LinkedIn is your ticket to make those strangers into your advocates.

Turn your marketing and comms skills on yourself. YOU’RE the brand that needs promoting.

No one is going to do it for you (although I can get you ready to do it brilliantly).

If you’re a comms or marketing professional looking for more detailed guidance, I run a group coaching program designed to help you navigate all of this. Now’s the time to start.
