Are we having fun yet?

Are we having fun yet?

Something to think about while you’re at work…

Are you having fun?

I’ve been thinking about fun a lot lately, so I asked people on LinkedIn how often they have fun at work. Only 18% of the 200 or so respondents said they have fun ‘often’.

Fun might not be the first word you associate with work, but fun is a serious matter! When we enjoy our days, connect with people, and feel like we belong, that’s when we do our best work. Fun creates loyalty, builds trust and energises us.

So why does it feel like fun has disappeared?

I wonder if it’s the pressure. The ever-present hum of do more, be more, want more. But with less time and fewer resources.

Somewhere along the line, success became synonymous with hustle. And fun became a luxury – something frivolous, even unprofessional.

I don’t know about you, but that’s not the kind of success I want.

I’m not bothered about status. I don’t call myself CEO. I’m not trying to ‘scale up’ and I don’t want to employ a team. I care deeply about doing good work – but I won’t let it make me unhappy or unwell. That means protecting my time and energy, and where possible – having fun.

Of course, everyone’s definition of success is different. If yours involves climbing the ladder or scaling something big, go for it! I hope you have some fun along the way. Afterall, fun and ambition aren’t mutually exclusive.

But if you’re craving space, purpose, and a bit more lightness in your day, you’re not wrong for feeling that might be enough.

So I’ll leave you with two questions I often ask my clients:

What does success look like for you now? And are you having any fun getting there?

If either of those made you pause, that’s where I can help. Whether it’s redefining what’s next, reconnecting with your values, or building a career that actually feels good, this is what I do.

You don’t have to figure it all out alone.
